• Photographs of Commonwealth troops have found their way into family albums through wartime friendships.

This soldier is wearing the distinctive New Zealand "lemon squeezer" hat.
He has a tunic similar to the British style with a pair of Lion and flag collar badges worn by the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. It has five black horn Rifle Regiment buttons identical to those worn by the British Rifle Regiments.
New Zealand troops did have their own pattern brass buttons.
New Zealanders epaulettes were piped with an arm of service colour.

The four battalion Regiment formed the whole 3rd (New Zealand Rifle) Brigade of the New Zealand Division. He wears a coloured patch on his arm.

• The badge on his right breast is probably a fern wreath regimental or reinforcement badge.
