| Introduced in 1918 these red chevrons indicate, not as one would expect completed years abroad, but the current year. Two chevrons indicate that a soldier has done at least a year and one day or at most a year and 364 days. The First World War chevrons were embroidered in wool and a blue chevron indicated service during 1914 but in photographs a darker chevron may indicate either a blue chevron or a newly issued red chevron. During the 1939-45 War chevrons were more usually printed cotton as shown here. |
