Edwardian • The Swaithed hat

Women from about 1910 to 1912

This hat marked the first step in the transition betwen the enormous Cartwheel hats and the domed crown hats of the Great War years.

Summer styles took the form of large straw "boaters".
The winter style had a downturned brim supported by the hair and held by hatpins. The side swirl hairstyle style was particularly successful with this hat.
The hat crown was swaithed in material in the Indian Pagri The cloth wrapped around a tropical pith helmet fashion.
Often made of straw plait wreathed in muslin or satin which gave the impression of weight without being unduly heavy.
