The Women's Voluntary Service became the formost welfare organisation of the war. At the beginning of the war ration books were issued. Children were evacuated from large cities to escape the bombing.
Families who had lost their homes and all their possessions in bombing raids, needed help.Clothing exchange shops were neded where families could exchange outgrown garments.
Jobs such as these were handled by the WVS.
The WVS provided a nationwide Civil Defence force which managed the social problems directly caused by the war.
